Understanding Your Phobia of Flying
Fear of Flying is an anxiety disorder that is brought about by a person’s fear of what could happen during a flight rather than what is actually happening. Trigger by several factors, such as other specific phobias, worries brought about by existing medical issues, or a traumatic experience from the past, it is important that you understand where your fear is coming from before choosing a treatment for yourself.
What aspect of flying are you afraid of?
- The idea of flying high in the sky?
- Being in a small room full of strangers?
- Having little control of your flight?
- Being away from people, places and things familiar to you?
- Turbulence?
When did you start being afraid of flying?
Try to recall whether you’ve always had a fear of flying or if there’s an event from your past that had caused you to feel scared.
- Did you have a traumatic experience associated with a past flying experience?
- Did something happen in your life that made you feel unsure of flying?
- Did someone cause you to feel hurt or angry or scared before you develop your fear of flying?
- Did you experience some discomfort from a previous flying trip?
Understanding where your fear of flying is coming from is the first step to help you manage your flying phobia. Looking at the nature of the problem can help you realized that you might need to address some other issues and not just your fear of flying. Try to fill your lungs from the bottom up. Pause, and then exhale slowly. Do this a couple of times and you’ll feel much better. Practice your controlled breathing whenever you can. Try it whenever you feel tense. Slow, deep breathing is the easiest and most effective method for calming yourself.
i think people suffering from Aerophobia sometimes complain of fear of all kinds of open spaces (agoraphobia), fear of confined spaces (claustrophobia), or even fear of falling, causing a detrimental development in the sufferer’s quality of life.
Worldwide more people die on the roads every day than die in air crashes in a year. But images of a relatively rare air disaster make far better TV news than a two car smash on the motorway. Making big air disasters become engrained in some people’s minds until they become a genuine fear.
There are also many reasons that spike in your “nervousness” levels may occur acrophobia, travel sickness, turbulence, fear of terrorism, etc. One other curious fact about fear of flying is that it is the only fear that is known to possibly increase the more you encounter the situation.
There are a couple of relaxation methods that you can apply on yourself to save you from this and other kinds of fear and stress. Muscular Relaxation, this technique concentrates on relaxing the musculo-skeletal system from the anxiety and fear that it is bearing. Deep-Breathing. These exercises will help you calm down and relieve you from stress and tension.
There are two sides to the fear of flying. The first is the actual flying process when you are right up in the air, and the other is the fear of crashing. However, there are people who fear not the flying or the crash, but the landing and take off period.
If you have a problem getting on a plane, this manual is going to show you how to overcome that fear. If motion or travel sickness is a malady that you are susceptible to, you are going to learn how to overcome that difficulty too.
People often misunderstand turbulence. When encountering turbulence, nervous passengers feel the plane is “falling” out of the sky. It is natural for them to only feel the “down” bumps. But for every “down” there is an “up” bump. The “downs” are just more easily noticed
The FAA mandates that modern jet aircraft are designed and built with large safety margins. All aircraft and their equipment are built from FAA approved designs and manufactured under FAA approved systems. Coming out of the factory, the planes are thoroughly flight tested before certification by the FAA. Structurally, these aircraft can withstand many times the stresses and forces which can be imposed upon them in flight. Remember, airplanes are MEANT to be in the air. That’s where they’re happiest!
Many people take comfort in going to the local airport to watch all the planes takeoff and land. After a while you begin to see that the flight operations are indeed routine. Others like to study the ARRIVAL and DEPARTURE monitors in the airport terminal to see just how many flights operate safely. Did you know that worldwide nearly 3 million passengers fly every day?
